El Paso

Just a few from El Paso during my visit a few weeks ago. The first is of the UTEP football stadium/field. It's very nice but didn't wow me like Notre Dame stadium did the first time I saw it. The next picture is Rosa's from the Marty Robbins song. Finally, El Paso from above near Kern's Place where my aunt lives. Veronica, if you're reading this, can you send me photos with all of us in them? Somehow, I didn't take one picture with people!

Best New York City Travel Apps

With so much inherent buzz, so much virility and as the standout global hive of activity, it stands to reason that New York City should be on the cusp of city app supremacy. Tech-savvy visitors to The Big Apple, for one, can already download a series of enlightening podcasts from the Mayor’s Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting entitled “Made in NY: Walking Tours of Film and Television in New York City”.
In the world of apps, the variety of choices available for The City That Never Sleeps is stupendous and, frankly, a little intimidating. Worry not, however, as we’ve happily sorted though the lot of them and separated the wheat from the chaff. With that in mind, check out the best apps for New York City tourists.

Air Force Museum

Here are a few pictures of aircraft from the Air Force Museum at Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton, Ohio. I went there with my family during my vacation a week ago. See if you can guess the name of the aircraft!

House Pictures

I was working in the yard today (enjoying my vacation) and decided to snap some pictures of my house. Here are a few with descriptions below each picture.

Various bushes/plants that need to be trimmed!

My house (full view)

The cul-de-sac nearby

Back Porch

SUV in the driveway (I'm one of the few who can actually use their garage)

More House Pictures!

I posted just a few more pictures of the house and surrounding area. One thing, the view from the backyard and across the field is of Culebra Road for any San Antonio residents who might be looking at these. I hope it's a long time before that field is sold for commercial reasons!

A Change of Pace

Here are some pictures of the area near Medina Lake, about 20 miles west of my house in San Antonio.  I took a drive there yesterday and snapped a few.  The second picture is a vintage ranch entrance.  I wanted to drive through it but didn't know how the owners might react (home defense is encouraged in Texas!).  Picture #4 is the lake with the dam in view.  Number five is a little chapel I found out in the middle of nowhere.  It's called 'St. Francis Chapel' and I wonder how many people attend mass there?  I took the last picture on my way back home via an alternate route.  I thought it was interesting how the trees had grown together over the road.

Kelly AFB Tour

Last Thursday, I got to take a tour of the flightline at Kelly Annex in conjunction with my job.  These pictures show a front view of a T-6 'Texan' trainer used to train student-pilots.  It was a very informative tour!

The Birds!!!

These two showed up on the window sill outside my office and refused to fly away.  I wonder if they were waiting for me to die or something!

Snow in San Antonio!

For the first time since I've lived here, I saw snow in San Antonio.  Amazingly, there was about an inch on the ground when I woke up this morning.  But, I wasn't affected too much since I'm orginally from Kentucky where they have much more snow than this.

Anyway, after getting ready I began the journey to work at 0530.  I could tell right away that something was wrong as the roads seemed too slippery for such a small amount of snow.  Well, what I eventually discovered was that the storm had begun with freezing rain and then the snow covered the sheet of ice that it left.  Furthermore, San Antonio doesn't have snow plows so the roads were in their natural condition.  I was about three-quarters of the way to work when my boss called me on my cell.  He told me that the reporting time was now 1200 and I need not leave home till then.  Since I was almost already there, I decided to go on in.  After arriving, the boss called again to say work had been cancelled for the day!  I waited about an hour and then returned home.

I have to tell you, the trip to work was a scene out of the apocalypse.  There were accidents everywhere but even more motorists stranded on inclines because they couldn't get enough traction to finish the climb.  Somehow, I was able to go around those individuals and maintain traction while driving uphill.  I followed the basic rules of driving in snow--pat the brake, anticipate stops and turns, and keep your distance from other cars.  Still, I did lose traction a few times and had to focus every second.  Driving in the dark didn't help either.

The ride back home was much better as I took an alternate route that was flatter.  I snapped this picture about a mile from my house just to prove I was on the road!!!
